Description:
A 3-CD set of rare recordings by the legendary conductorThis is the first album to compile the rare recordings made by Erich Kleiber with the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for Polydor/Gramophone. Kleiber became music director of the Berlin State Opera in 1923 at the age of 33, impressing audiences and critics alike with performances of unparalleled power and intensity. In 1926, he signed a contract with Gramophone and recorded with both orchestras in Berlin. The album begins with Mozart’s Four German Dances on both sides of the SP record, followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished,” Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” and the overtures to “Rosamunde,” “A Summer Night’s Dream,” “William Tell and Overture to Die Fledermaus. Although many of these recordings were never released or critically acclaimed abroad due to their artistry, the 1928 recording of “Moldau” soon gained an important place in the classical repertoire.
