He is also a member of Irakere. Cuban-born Roman Filiu has participated in Cuban jazz works such as Alfredo Rodriguez’s second album “The Invasion Parade” and Paquito Delivera’s saxophone ensemble work “Kites Over Havana” and is currently based in New York City. He is a saxophonist and composer based in New York. The ensemble consists of up to seven members, depending on the piece. Members include Matt Brewer (b), who has played with Antonio Sanchez and Greg Osby, Craig Weinrib (ds), who has played with Glenn Zalesky, Ben Van Gelder, and other NYC musicians of the next generation, and the young Craig Weinrib, who has played with Criss Cross and Dinah Steffens, who has released on Sunnyside, Ralph Alessi (tp) and David Virelles (p), who have also released on ECM, also participate in this project. Filiu was commissioned by the Jazz Gallery, an important jazz center in New York City, to compose this album. His goal was to create a suite that would include a wide variety of musical styles performed by a diverse group of musicians. The compositions are dense, intertwining complex rhythms and counterpoint melodies, with lots of free space for high-level improvisation.” Fulcanelli” is an M-BASE-like piece with a hint of Steve Coleman’s influence. The group has also absorbed a variety of music as well as jazz, including “Grass,” “Danza #1,” and “Danza #3,” which were influenced by the contemporary music composer Olivier Messiaen.The sound is dark and serious throughout, but the mix of ideas, calculations, and improvisations is so informative that it keeps the listener on their toes. It is New York-style contemporary jazz with a bit of its roots in Cuban rhythms.
